Additional securing of the bikes mounted on bike racks ensures that the load does not slide back and forth or even fall off, even in extreme conditions or in the event of possible operating errors. Regardless of the bike rack system you choose, you should make sure that the weight does not exceed the permissible support and axle loads of the motor home or caravan.
The ADAC advises for the transport of bicycles:
For new carriers, practice mounting the carrier and bicycle at your leisure. It is imperative that you follow the installation instructions, safety and hazard information provided by the carrier manufacturer and the vehicle operating instructions. If no maximum speed is specified, do not drive faster than 120 km/h! Regularly check the fastening of the carrier and the bicycles. For unusual shapes of the bicycle frame, coordinated fastenings may be provided under certain circumstances. This is especially true for frames with a very large tube cross-section. If in doubt, consult the carrier manufacturer. It is essential to remove all attachments on the bicycle (e.g. child seat, panniers) that could come loose and fall off. To prevent the wheels from rolling back and forth in the base rails, attach rim straps so that the bicycle is stretched lengthwise.
In addition, rubber or Velcro straps can be wrapped around the brake levers in such a way as to prevent the wheels from turning. In addition, once the bike has been fully and correctly assembled, an additional sturdy tension strap should be fitted around the bikes and bars of the carrier. This can prevent falling down even under extreme conditions.
